How to use this GPA calculator

  1. Type the name of each course (optional).
  2. Choose the letter grade you received or expect to receive.
  3. Enter the credit hours for the course. Most college classes are 3 or 4 credits.
  4. Press Add course for more rows. Your GPA updates as you type.

The GPA formula

Your GPA is the total quality points divided by the total credit hours:

GPA = (grade points × credits for every course) ÷ total credits

Example: You earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class. Quality points are 4.0 × 3 = 12 and 3.0 × 4 = 12. Total is 24 points over 7 credits, so your GPA is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.

Grade point scale used

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades. Some schools do not give an A+ more than 4.0, and a few use 4.3 for an A+. Check your school's policy if you need an exact match.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA?

On a 4.0 scale, a 3.0 (a B average) is generally considered solid, 3.5 or higher is strong, and 3.7 or higher usually puts you in the top tier. What counts as good also depends on your school, your major and what you are applying for.

How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0). Multiply the points by the course credits to get quality points, add them all up, then divide by the total credits.

Does this calculator work for high school and college?

Yes. The 4.0 scale is used by most US colleges and high schools. If your high school uses weighted grades for honors or AP classes, use the weighted GPA calculator.

Are my grades saved or shared?

No. All calculations happen in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our servers. Your rows are kept only in your own browser so they are still there when you come back.
