How semester GPA works
Your semester GPA (also called term GPA) only includes the classes you took in one term. Each course is weighted by its credit hours, so a 4-credit lab counts more than a 1-credit seminar.
Step by step
- List every course for the semester with its credit hours.
- Convert each letter grade to grade points using the table below.
- Multiply grade points by credits to get quality points.
- Add the quality points and divide by the total credits.
Example: A (3 credits) = 12.0, B+ (3 credits) = 9.9, B (4 credits) = 12.0, A- (3 credits) = 11.1. Total quality points are 45.0 over 13 credits, so the semester GPA is 3.46.
| Letter grade | Percentage | 4.0 scale |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100 | 4.0 |
| A | 93-96 | 4.0 |
| A- | 90-92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87-89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83-86 | 3.0 |
| B- | 80-82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77-79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73-76 | 2.0 |
| C- | 70-72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67-69 | 1.3 |
| D | 63-66 | 1.0 |
| D- | 60-62 | 0.7 |
| F | Below 60 | 0.0 |
Which classes count?
Most schools exclude pass/fail, audit and withdrawn (W) courses from GPA. If you repeated a class, check whether your school replaces the old grade or averages both. Enter only the courses that count toward GPA at your school.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA?
On a 4.0 scale, a 3.0 (a B average) is generally considered solid, 3.5 or higher is strong, and 3.7 or higher usually puts you in the top tier. What counts as good also depends on your school, your major and what you are applying for.
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0). Multiply the points by the course credits to get quality points, add them all up, then divide by the total credits.
Do pass/fail classes count in GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail courses give credit but do not affect your GPA at most colleges. Leave them out of the calculator.
How many credits is a full-time semester?
Full-time is usually 12 credits or more. A typical load is 15 credits, which is five 3-credit classes.
