Calculate a college GPA with credit hours

College GPA is a credit-weighted average, not the simple average of your course grades. A four-credit science class has more influence than a one-credit seminar. Enter each graded course above with the credit hours shown in your syllabus or student portal. Change a grade to test a possible outcome; the result updates without submitting your grades anywhere.

Our default scale gives A and A+ 4.0 points, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0 and F 0. Some colleges use 3.67 instead of 3.7, award 4.3 for A+, or have different repeat policies. For an official calculation, use your institution's published grade-point table.

The credit-hour formula

Term GPA = sum of (grade points × course credits) ÷ sum of GPA-eligible credits

Suppose you earn an A in a 4-credit course, a B+ in a 3-credit course and a B in a 2-credit course. The quality points are 16, 9.9 and 6. That is 31.9 quality points over 9 credits: 31.9 ÷ 9 = 3.54 GPA when rounded to two decimals. Averaging 4.0, 3.3 and 3.0 equally would give 3.43 and undercount the four-credit A.

What should you include?

Include courses that your college counts in its GPA. Most colleges exclude withdrawals, audits and pass/fail courses from the grade-point average, even when a passing course earns credit. Transfer credits may count toward a degree without carrying into the receiving college's GPA. Repeated courses can replace a grade, average both attempts, or follow another rule. Check your transcript before entering these courses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GPA from college credits?

Convert each letter grade to points, multiply by the course credits, add the quality points, then divide by the total GPA-eligible credits.

Does a four-credit class affect GPA more?

Yes. Its grade points are multiplied by four, so it has twice the influence of a two-credit class on your term GPA.

Do pass/fail and transfer credits count?

Policies vary. Many colleges exclude pass/fail grades and transfer grades from their institutional GPA while still awarding eligible credit. Check your transcript.

Is this my cumulative GPA?

This page calculates the courses you enter. To combine them with past semesters, use the cumulative GPA calculator and enter your previous GPA and credits.
