GPA Goal Calculator

Work backward from a target cumulative GPA to the average you need in future courses.

What GPA do you need next term?

Enter the cumulative GPA and GPA-eligible credits on your latest transcript, the credits you plan to take, and the overall GPA you want after those courses. This calculator solves for the average grade points you need in that future block of credits. It does not predict individual course grades or account for a school's grade-replacement policy.

Required future GPA = [target GPA × (completed credits + future credits) − current GPA × completed credits] ÷ future credits

For example, if you have a 3.20 after 60 credits, plan 15 more credits and want a 3.30 overall, you need (3.30 × 75 − 3.20 × 60) ÷ 15 = 3.70 across the next 15 credits. That is an average on our 4.0 scale, not necessarily one exact letter grade in every class.

What if the required GPA is above 4.0?

Under an unweighted 4.0 system, a result above 4.0 means the target cannot be reached in the number of future credits entered. Try a lower target or increase the number of future credits to see a longer path. If the result is zero or below, you have already met the target mathematically even with zero new quality points; you still need to satisfy any graduation or course-passing rules.

Plan realistically

Start with the number of courses you expect to take, then look at how the required average changes over one or two semesters. More completed credits make the cumulative average slower to move. Some schools exclude transfer credits from their GPA, allow grade replacement after retakes, or calculate major GPA separately. Enter only credits that your institution includes in the same cumulative GPA.

To test an actual set of future letter grades instead of one required average, use our cumulative GPA calculator. For term-only grades, use the college GPA calculator. Our GPA improvement guide explains how to make a realistic plan.

Frequently asked questions

What future GPA do I need to reach my target?

The calculator divides the quality points still needed by your future GPA-eligible credits. Enter your current GPA, completed credits, planned credits and target.

Why is my required GPA over 4.0?

With the future credits entered, the target requires more quality points than an unweighted 4.0 average can supply. More credits or a lower target may make it reachable.

Can I use this for a weighted high school GPA?

No. This planner assumes an unweighted 4.0 maximum. Weighted high-school scales can exceed 4.0 and have school-specific rules.

Does retaking an F help?

It can, but the impact depends on whether your institution replaces the old grade, averages both attempts, or treats repeats differently. This tool does not model grade replacement.
