How to calculate your high school GPA

List the graded classes on your transcript, choose a letter grade and set each course's credit value. For a full-year class, your school may award 1 credit; a semester course might be 0.5. Use the values your school assigns, not an assumed number of classes. The calculator weights each class by its credits and displays two results at once.

Unweighted GPA uses the same 4.0 letter-grade points for every class. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 to a passing honors grade and 1.0 to a passing AP or IB grade in this tool. An F remains 0. Your school may add different bonuses or weight only certain subjects, so these results are planning estimates rather than an official transcript.

A three-class example

Imagine three 1-credit classes: AP English with an A, honors chemistry with a B, and regular history with an A-. The unweighted points are 4.0 + 3.0 + 3.7 = 10.7, for 3.57 unweighted. With our bonuses, the weighted points are 5.0 + 3.5 + 3.7 = 12.2, for 4.07 weighted. If chemistry were a 0.5-credit course, both results would change because credits affect the average.

Which GPA should you report?

Use the GPA and scale shown on your official high school transcript when an application asks for your reported GPA. Colleges may inspect your course rigor and recalculate an academic GPA in their own way. Do not convert a weighted 4.07 into a 4.0 unweighted score by simply dividing by 5 and multiplying by 4; the underlying grades and class levels matter.

For a closer look at the 5.0-style bonuses, open the 5.0 GPA scale calculator. For a plain 4.0 term average, use the GPA calculator. Our grade point chart shows the unweighted letter grades behind both results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted high school GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 letter-grade scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds the configured bonuses for advanced courses, so it can exceed 4.0.

Is a 4.0 weighted GPA the same as a 4.0 unweighted GPA?

No. A 4.0 unweighted GPA means an A-level average on this scale. A 4.0 weighted GPA can include lower grades offset by advanced-course bonuses.

How do I enter a semester class?

Use the credit value assigned by your school. If a full-year course is 1 credit and a semester course is 0.5, enter 0.5 for the semester class.

Do colleges recalculate high school GPA?

Some do. Admissions offices can use their own subject and weighting rules, so the official transcript and school profile remain the best references.
